Involvement

Oak Ridge Estates is actively developing a Firewise USA® Community to reduce wildfire risk and foster neighborhood resilience. Our community is strategically divided into six Firewise blocks, each overseen by a Block Captain and, in some cases, a Co-Captain. This structure supports personalized communication, efficient data collection, and coordinated mitigation efforts.

Becoming a Firewise community helps protect lives and homes and can also increase property values. In the event of a wildfire, it can influence fire response prioritization—making your involvement both practical and life-saving.

🛠️ Four Levels of Involvement

1. Firewise Participants

Every resident can contribute by completing and reporting just one hour per year of wildfire risk reduction activities—like weed whacking, tree trimming, or hardscaping. These small efforts protect your home and strengthen community-wide preparedness.

2. Firewise Block Captains

Captains are the heart of the Firewise effort, connecting neighbors and coordinating data collection.
Responsibilities include:

  1. Encouraging block-wide participation
  2. Maintaining an up-to-date resident contact list
  3. Sharing important wildfire preparedness information
  4. Reviewing and submitting annual risk reduction activities
  5. Participating on the Firewise Board

3. Firewise Board

The board coordinates strategy and community engagement. It includes:

  • 6 Block Captains
  • Darren Shetler (Castlerock Development)
  • Dave Van Son (City of Atascadero Battalion Chief – Community Risk Reduction)
  • 3 Resident Leaders

The board reviews risk assessments and sets priorities based on our Firewise Action Plan.

4. Firewise Resident Leaders

Resident Leaders are the designated Firewise USA® representatives for Oak Ridge Estates. They manage applications, communicate with the national program, and oversee ongoing compliance.
